Another Amish tradition happens in the fall when the apples are harvested. Picture a huge kettle hanging over an open fire in the back yard, with someone stirring and adding the right blend of cinnamon and other spices. While we don't do this outside, we do cook our apple butter in a big kettle in our bakery. Often, as it is cooking down, the heady aroma draws our guests to the bakery door to find out just what that tantalizing smell is!
