A Closer Look at this Previously Featured Amish Recipe

Orange Nut Bread

rind of one orange, grated

1/2 cup water

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup sugar

juice of one orange

enough milk added to orange juice to make one cup

1 egg, beaten

1 cup sifted flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon sode

1/4 cup shortening

1/2 cup chopped nuts

Combine orange rind, water, salt and sugar and boil for 10  minutes.  Cool.  Add milk to orange juice, then add cooled mixture.  Sift flours with baking powder and soda.  Cut in shortening until mixture is like meal.  Pour liquids into dry ingredients and stir vigorously until well mixed.  Add nuts and blend.  Bake in loaf pan in 350o oven 50 to 60 minutes.
