A Closer Look at this Previously Featured Amish Recipe

Early Bird Coffee Cake

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon soda

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2 cups brown sugar

2/3 cup shortening

1 cup buttermilk or sour milk

2 eggs

Preheat oven to 375o.  Sift first six ingredients into mixing bowl. Cut in sugar and shortening until crumbly.  Reserve one cup for topping.  Stir in milk and egg just until flour is moistened.  Pour batter into greased 9 x 9 pan.  Sprinke reserved crumb mixture over batter.  Bake at 375o for 35-40 minutes.
